Factors Critical for a Successful Repurposed Medicine

Hydroxychloroquine, ivermectin…Hype surrounding various repurposed drugs for COVID-19 have resulted in dashed hopes.  Drug repurposing can be cost- and time-effective way for providing medicines for a new indication but the processes required to be successful are not necessarily obvious nor easy.  Factors to consider include financial, clinical and regulatory pathways, intellectual property and more.  This manuscript in Science Translational Medicine and article in The Conversation discuss aspects of drug repurposing that help to ensure success.
